Thankful for Where We Live

Where we live in Virginia we are only an hour from the University of Virginia, 30 minutes from Liberty University and countless other colleges in Lynchburg. But, a little gem hidden in the woods only 15-20 minutes from our house is Sweet Briar College. Yes, 15 minutes from the house is very close for where we live!

This college is an all girls school that is hidden away in the woods and has an expansive campus, with horse stables and many hiking trails. And the locals are welcome to come and use the campus and enjoy all that is available.

We were recently able to get Faith into their dance classes. As an opportunity for their dance major students to get teaching experience, they provide dance classes. So once a week she goes to dance class for an hour and I've been able to enjoy their new indoor track that is in the building right next door.

(Forgive the quality of my phone camera, and my desire to not slow my pace.)

Although most days I love where we now live, secluded and remote, the biggest adjustment and frustration has been where we live, secluded and remote. It's the little things like enjoying the Sweet Briar Campus that make me thankful where we live.

Thank you Lord for the little things!

No that is not little bits of mold growing in those cookies! They are mint chips!

I discovered yesterday that Nestle came out with a seasonal Dark Chocolate & Mint Morsels! Not sure why it possessed me to buy them (most likely because I hadn't eat lunch before entering the store and they were on sale). But, I bought them and baked these little gems last night! Oh my, oh my, they are just too yummy and I had to share this with you.

If you like "grasshopper" cookies or girl scout's thin mint cookies you're gonna love these! Go out and buy a bag (in fact stock up because they are seasonal and you won't get them again until next year). Make the recipe on the back of the bag "Mint Chocolate Delights", and let me know what you think.

Let me also share with you my secret to getting perfect chocolate chip cookies every time. I use 3 cups of flour not just the 2 1/4 on the recipe. (With these I used all whole wheat, you can't taste any difference.) I also add 1 tsp. of baking powder to the dough.

One last suggestion: Call the 800 number for Nestles on the bag, tell them how much you enjoy them and they will send you some coupons for more!! (Can you guess what I did today? Tah hee hee)

1. I finished knitting a pair of socks that will be for Haley for Christmas. Didn't the yarn work up into a beautiful pattern?

2. Mike and I joined the gym for the remainder of October. We'll see how it goes. I was also able to find time to get there 3x this week! I realize this doesn't sound like much, but with Mike having worked the last 6 days (and probably the next 5) having to leave Jake to watch Faith so I can go. This is really good! (Amazing how much guilt a mother can feel when doing something simple for herself.)

3. Was able to bake bread this week. Although the weather hasn't cooled to "fall" temperatures yet it was pleasant enough, and I found the time.

1. On Friday I ordered the kids curriculum and school books. Finally!!

2. Curriculum and books arrived Monday, we started school Tuesday. When you wait until October to start school thought it would be best not to put it off any longer. So far... we're settling back in.

3. Mike and I decided to try a free week at the local 24 hour gym. It is especially nice because Jacob and Haley are old enough to go too. Consider it P.E. class. We'll see how it goes...

Comments on Home Schooling

The most common reply I get when telling people we home school our kids is, "I could never do that I don't have the patience."

If they only knew how little patience I have, is all I can think. I'm not one of those wonderful home schooling moms who can leave the laundry until later, or can have a sink with dirty dishes in it and know I can get to it at some point. I've said it before, I'm an A-type personality and I like things to be "just so".

This is our 7th year home schooling and I still pray for patience (and blinders) EVERY day. I try to look at it as my way of learning and growing within myself. And although I still have a lot to learn, "I've come a long way baby!"

Today we started school. Yeah, yeah, I know it is October!! Figured it was time. Jacob (15 yo) told me this morning, he hates some of the reactions he gets when he tells other kids he's home schooled. Especially, "I could never do that! I'd miss out on so much." Jacob can't understand what he's missing out on. He has plenty of friends and a pretty active social life.

Haley's comment to this was, "You mean they don't want to be with their parents all day most likely." My kids agreed that was something they liked most about home schooling. I was so pleased!! I guess even when I'm having a "bad" day they don't mind me so much.

What are some of the worst comments you hear? Other than the usual: "What about socialization?"

Tying One On

At Haley's christening (now 12), a dear friend of ours gave her a sweet little pink rosary as a gift. The note inside said she had prayed each day on the rosary for Haley while she was in the NICU after being born. It brought tears to my eyes then and still warms my heart when I think of it. Haley still prays on this same rosary now! It is a twine rosary my friend had made.

Years later I found out how to make them and purchased my own supply of twine. For several months the kids and I made rosaries, prayed on them, and some were even given as gifts. My father was a recipient of one, and prayed on them up until the day he died.

Now that I spend most of my free time knitting I haven't made any rosaries in few years. Yesterday while praying the thought of the rosaries came flooding back to me. So.... I pulled out my twine and made a set. It felt good!! Although I probably won't go full throttle into the rosary making realm again, I may "tie" a few more than I have been...

I'm Riding the High

This is how I've been feeling lately! Like I'm on air!

I've always been a person who is easily stressed, and worries about everything, and I also know that if I can just put a little exercise into my routine it helps so much with all of that. Prayer helps too, but I really need the endorphins released with exercise. The only problem is, I hate exercise!!

Well, for now I'm on a good routine and I'm riding the high!

Small Successes

It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that.

This Thursday morning there is a beautiful steady rain falling, we have no where to be, so getting out of bed wasn't easy and a small triumph that I did. I adore it when it rains! LOVE the sound and warmth inside it creates.

1. Made myself some new dish cloths this week. It seems that these things get tattered and worn out all at the same time.

2. With laundry, house work, kids, and of course knitting, exercise is the first thing to get cut from the day. This week I've made it more of a priority, and it feels good!

3. Haven't been spending as much time blogging, reading blogs or just plain sitting at the computer on line. Definitely freeing some time for #2, but this will also prepare me for when we drop our satellite internet and go to dial up.

Because a couple people asked for it I will share my Apple Turkey Maple Meatloaf recipe. I however can not take full credit for it. Quite a few years ago I saw Rachel Ray make something on her show and I just spun off from that.

The other thing to note would be that I rarely if ever measure when I make this (or most dinner recipes) so the measurements given are all by eye.

Apple Turkey Maple Meatloaf

Combine:

2 lbs. ground turkey meat

1 small or 1/2 large apple peeled cored and chopped into small pieces

about 1/4-1/2 a cup of maple syrup

1 Tbs. McCormick's Montreal Seasoning

1 Tbs. poultry seasoning

The mixture is very wet. But do your best to form it into a large log and place into a foil lined baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake at 375 for 45 min to an hour (until cooked through).

Enjoy!! Very easy and a definite family favorite.

My successes this week:

1. Used up almost all the apples we picked last Thursday, by baking pie, apple crisp and apple maple turkey meatloaf (a family favorite), plus just snacking.

2. Surveyed the hand-me-downs we brought with us when we moved 2 years ago, for Faith. So glad we bothered, she should be all set for another season!!

3. Finished the hoodie I was knitting for Faith. This will not be put away as a Christmas gift, but certainly isn't needed just yet. I'm so please with the way it turned out.

Tender and Sweet Hearted

Although playing with Barbie Dolls comes and goes in waves for Faith, true to her character when she decides to play with anything she goes at it whole heartedly!! Last night she took a Barbie into the shower with her and hasn't stopped playing with it ever since, it even slept next to her last night.

The part I find so remarkable about this play time is when she told me this morning this was her favorite Barbie ever and that she was going to take her everywhere with her. This is the doll.

Notice anything different? That's right she is missing an arm. Thanks to the dog when he was a pup. We must have over a dozen dolls that have all working limbs, but this one is her favorite!! She said the Barbie needs her help and care that is why she is her favorite.

I thought this was just the sweetest thing a 6 yo could say and I had to share.

It's That Time of Year!

Yesterday we took our annual trip to the apple orchard.

This year we ventured out to another county and a different orchard. We were able to chat with the wife of the son of the owner. (Did you follow that?) They are the 7th generation on the farm and she was telling us how her mother-in-law has the original deed for the property and it was signed over from King George. LOVE that kind of genealogical history!!

No I didn't have a 4th child, Jake brought a friend.

We were able to pick red and golden delicious off the trees, and some were over a lb. each!! They were huge!

I made a pie using only 3 of the apples.

After apple picking we went to the Devil's Backbone Brewery, had a small bite to eat and a drink.

Then we went to the grocery store, bought some ice cream and found a place to sit and enjoy that!!

It was a simple day, but we all had a great day!

1. Sent the kid's most recent achievement test scores to the Superintendent of Schools. This is required by the home schooling law in Virginia and although I've always given the kids the test, I've never sent the results in. Whoops!

2. Cleaned out that stack of papers I keep in the corner of kitchen counter with old church bulletins, permission slips, library fliers and etc. We all have a pile like that, don't we? It really should be weeded through every couple of weeks, but around here it only gets done ever 3 months or so.

3. Finished the socks for Faith and made her a hat. Both are tucked away to be Christmas gifts.

It's one thing to know that here in Virginia we have poisonous snakes. It's an entirely different thing when you actually find one dead in the driveway and see them for yourself!! Oh my gosh!!

It's a Southern Copperhead. A baby, but still!!

Seriously considering keeping the kids, the dog, the cat and myself locked in the house now!! We never had these in New England!

Casted on the Children's Tunic in a lovely shade of pink by Brown Sheep Company, also for Faith. This won't be tucked away for Christmas.

Guess I'm in a children's knit mode, and I'm just not sure what to knit for Jacob and Haley for Christmas yet...

A Little Knitting Going On!

I'm completely flattered that my husband asked me if I could make something for a man at work whose wife who is having a baby. I even had some baby yarn in the stash!!!

Made this small blanket and hat, from Natural Knits for Babies and Moms by Louisa Harding.

Then casted on a pair of socks for Faith. So far she hasn't asked what I'm knitting or who it is for. Hoping I can get them made and put them away for Christmas for her.

I'm hoping I can do more knitting for the kids and gift it to them for Christmas. Is that corny? Or old fashioned? Well... even if it is... I am corny and old fashioned so it doesn't matter... does it?

1. Finally wrote and mailed the letter to the school superintendent notifying him our plan to continue home schooling for this school year. Suppose to do this by August 15th every year. Whoops!

2.Went to visit cousin Larry for an overnight stay. This was long over due. Mike had gone with the Haley and Jacob last fall, but I haven't seen him since December or his family since last July. This is a huge success in my book! Trying to be more like Mary and less like Martha.

3. Knitted a baby blanket and a hat. Someone Mike works with's wife is having a baby, so now we have a gift to give when the baby is born.

Visit with Family

Although it was a short a visit, it was a wonderful visit with cousin Larry, his wife Diane and their two sons, Zeb and Eli.

Our 3+ hours of travel (each way) went just swimmingly. In other words, Faith didn't get car sick thanks to anti motion sickness pills.

We're Hitting the Road

Mike has been working a lot of overtime! Add to that his regular schedule is really lousy Friday, Saturday, & Sunday 7a -7p. Thursday night he made the comment, "Tomorrow begins my 3 day sentence to Hell." It is really hard to see the man you love in such a state! Especially when you know what he's doing is to provide for the family.

So when he mentioned he wanted to take a trip to visit cousin Larry and his family, how could I refuse?

My cousin lives in south western Virginia on a lovely 90+ acre tree farm, about 3 hours from us. Mike and him are like 2 peas in a pod and because Larry is in his late 50's he is like a big brother to Mike. Mike does have 2 older brothers, but the relationships aren't like that.

I'm packing the kids and the dog up, loading the truck, picking Mike up at work and we're off to visit overnight with Larry. Mike's one day off will be tomorrow and we had nothing planned I had to agree!

I'm a home body, there I admit it. I love to be at home! Which works out really well for my carrier of being a SAHM!! It's really funny too because my oldest sister is a go, go, go, kind of gal and has even made the comment, "Poor Michelle." Like being at home was some kind of punishment for me!! It's really funny!

But, I'm breaking the mold this week and I'm headed out! All in the name of love for my husband and okay I'll admit this too, I enjoy spending time with Larry and his wife Diane. It will be well worth it for all of us!

Ready for Colder Weather

As I look back at all the knitting/crocheting I've done for the summer, I'm quite impressed with my efforts. Not only have I gifted a few items I've also added to my wardrobe for the coming winter! 2 new sweaters: Olivine and Summer's End and 3 pairs of socks: a basic ribbed pair and Embossed Leaves

I RARELY buy myself any clothing! I'm not much of a shopper and would rather get my kids clothes than myself when the mood finally strikes. So I'm feeling really good about my accomplishments and am ready for the weather to turn colder!

1. I finished the sweater for my sister. She was able to wear it home Friday morning when she left.

2. Finally got around to emailing the chair of the Justice and Peace committee at church to let her know that I wanted to be on the committee! Why is it I always have the best of intentions, but I never get around to "officially" doing whatever it is. I'm counting this simple task a huge success this week.

3. Got my car inspected! With a day to spare!! Part of my reasoning for putting this off is because my car is 11 years old and I'm really afraid they'll find something seriously wrong with it! It passed!!!

Oh What a Day!

Have I ever mentioned Mike works for Frito Lay? Well he does! Although there are a lot of things I'm sure he would change about the day to day operations of the place he works, there are some really good things they do for the employees.

Like: Every summer they give the employees tickets for their entire family to go to King's Dominion here in Virginia. Plus "food coupons"! Our family received $60 in food vouchers.

Because we home school we opted to take our kids yesterday, after most everyone was back in school. It was a hot 90 degree day and it was perfect! The best part being the longest we waited to do any ride was 10 minutes (maybe). When at the prime of the season there can be 1 or 2 hour wait for the most popular rides!

The place is HUGE! I don't think we walked that much when we took the kids to Disney World! There is sooo much to do!

We spent a few hours in the water park where we all got wet and laughed until we cried! Sorry no photos the camera stayed tucked safely away in the locker.

After drying off we headed to the "dry" rides!! Faith enjoyed the slower paced stuff, Jake was the thrill seeker and Haley just watched it all go down (she's the safe one, the merry go round is her favorite).

All I could think to myself, "Where is that little boy that used to want to ride the fire engine around in a circle?" Gone are the days I guess.

Although this morning there are a few of us doctoring blisters, and all of us have sore feet, we are already talking about next year's trip!!

Quick Easy Simple Gift

Made these chap stick/lip balm holders for Haley and Faith's friends. Just because I wanted them to have a trinket when Haley went to visit yesterday. And although I am a one project at the time kind of gal (shocking to some of my knitting/blogging friends out there {clears throat} Shelly!) I do like to change the pace sometimes with something quick and easy.

They are crocheted and not knitted!! Double shocker!

Footnote: I didn't put the lanyard because on the ones that I have previously I didn't like it.

Working to Keep It Natural - Idiom?

When Mike and I chose to put in a front walk that was intended to look natural and not concrete poured, we (ok I) had no idea what kind of work was involved to keep it looking "natural".

Maybe because last summer just to get grass to grow anywhere in our yard was a phenomena, I didn't know it could be a lot of work.

This summer grass is growing and without even realizing it, it began to cover the stones of the walk. The other day Mike mentioned how wet his feet were from the dew as he walked over the walk way. He complained and said he was thinking of putting in a concrete path.

NO! I really want to keep it more "natural" looking!

Yesterday was a beautiful day, warm but not too humid so I got out on my hands and knees and went to work. I actually found some stones that were completely covered with grass! I didn't get to finish, sweat began to run into my eyes, still have about 6 more stones to work on (as you can see). Will try to get to that today.

It certainly looks better than it did!

I Finished!!

I finished the sweater for my sister! She was wearing it this morning when she left. 64 degrees out calls for a good sweater!

She is a nurse and always wears a sweater to work. In Charleston, SC they keep the air conditioning kind of cool I guess in the hospital so she needs it. Made the sleeves 3/4 length, didn't want them getting in her way while she worked.

Really like the buttons too! She wears navy blue scrubs for work and I think the color of the buttons will co-ordinate nicely.

Actually got the bibs I knitted for my great niece into the mail. Only a day after finishing them!
Got a lot of work done on the sweater I'm knitting for my sister Suzanne. Although she is here visiting until tomorrow, I'm not sure if it will be finished by the time she leaves. With the visit I'm not able to sit and knit. Would rather be more like Mary than Martha on this one.
Took the time to "spring" clean my son's room. I try to make my kids responsible for their own rooms. Not only is it good for them, but it relieves some housework burden for me. (More time to knit! LOL) But, it is important for me to make time to do a thorough cleaning myself on occassion. Especially when it involves a 15 yo boy!! Tah hee hee!

Typical Morning Here in the Boonies

I've mentioned before how rural our lives here in central Virginia are, and this morning proved it. When my sister, who is visiting with mom for a couple of days on their return trip from Massachusetts to S.C., went out for a walk with my girls she came across this in the front yard.

We called the farmer neighbor who owns the cows to come and coral her back into the field.

Free entertainment and manure for the lawn all in one morning!! Who could ask for anything more?

The Summons

As I mentioned in previous posts, my niece got married yesterday. She lives in Massachusetts, and although we were all invited to attend we just couldn't make the trip. But, for the past few days it is all I've been able to think about. All my family together to celebrate, and I couldn't be part of it. Yesterday was especially difficult and they were all I thought of most of the day.

While sitting in church last night and having my thoughts once again drift to my niece and my family the choir sang the song "The Summons". Some of the lyrics: Will you come and follow me If I just call your name?... The song really struck a chord for me.

When Mike and I offered up in prayer the opportunity for God to take a hand in our decision to move away He did. He sold our house, gave Mike a job and provided us with a new home. It all happened so quickly, and in a declining economy, there was no doubt God had control. We weren't sure why at that time, but I do know now it was to be here for my father to live and die in peace last year. I am confident still that our lives here are for a reason no matter how great or small.

God asks us to follow a path sometimes that pull us away from the ones we love. Much like when he asked the disciples, "Put down your nets and come follow me." He wasn't just talking about leaving their possessions He wanted them to leave their families too.

Although I don't believe I have a huge purpose like that of the disciples, I find solace in knowing that although I can't always be with my family I'm here in Virginia because that is where God needs me to be.

My brother's daughter (my niece) had a baby girl on 8/6. Not sure why it happened that I had nothing knitted to send her for this little doll of a baby, but I went out Saturday and bought some cotton, and got right to work Sunday. I made her 5 bibs. Now to get them into the mail!

I finally shipped off the afghan I made for my niece who is getting married Saturday (8/21). I've had this made since May, but thought it best to mail closer to the wedding date. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!!
I LOVE to sleep however, I've found with age and my bladder waking me at night getting back to sleep isn't as easy as it once was. Because we don't have to rush out the door to get any where (most mornings) I sleep until I wake. This week I've started setting my alarm and have been forcing myself up regardless of how I slept the night before. I'm thinking this new routine will allow me to sleep more easily regardless of waking up. So far, not too bad, but I'm going to continue.
Another niece had a baby on 8/6. Not sure why I had nothing knitted to send her, but this week I've nearly finished 5 bibs, that will be in the mail tomorrow!

I'm pleased with my week! Thank you God for another wonderful week to be a stay-at-home wife and mother! I've got the best job in the world!!

A few months ago I briefly mentioned that our son Jacob (15) was seriously considering going to the public high school. He will be starting 10th grade and has made a lot friends that go there. The high school covers the entire county and has over 1400 students. They have plenty of extracurricular activities for the students which includes an incredible performing arts program. This was the biggest draw for Jacob. The opportunity to showcase his musical talents and expand those horizons.

Mike and I have always told the kids that if they ever wanted to go back to school and stop home schooling we would support them. So when Jacob told us this was his desire we did what we could to support his decision. Even if my support came reluctantly and with lots of prayers in the process.

School started yesterday in the county and Jacob has been sleeping late each of the last 2 days. Guess he decided he had it better at home? I can tell he is lonely for the friends he had available to him all day every day this past summer that are now off to school, but I'm confident he made the right choice.

Being a home schooling mom I sometimes feel like I'm also a cruise ship director. I'm required to always keep everyone entertained or on time for the next port of call. Most every day I get asked, "What are we doing today?" And if I fall short in this job there may be a mutiny. Was that the reason for him wanting to go to public school? I fell short? Am I the only one who sometimes feels this way?

For now I'll just cherish another year of homeschooling with my son, and pray that what may come next school year will be the best choice for him and his future.

But just look at the mascot differences!!! Oh Lord, I've got my work cut out for me!! LOL

Too Confident in My Child's Faith?

In Virginia the largest religious denomination is Baptist at 14% compared to the 7% of Catholics living in Virginia. We knew these number when we moved here and it really didn't weigh on our decision. Why should it?

With this difference in numbers it would be obvious that our children would and will be making friends with lots of children and families that aren't Catholic. Again, we are okay with that. Why wouldn't we be?

We are giving our children a completely Catholic education with them being completely enrolled in Seton Home Study School. Plus Mike and I work really hard to keep a devote Catholic home. We think they are getting the foundation of their Catholic faith and if when they grow up to make their own decisions on their faith they will stay firmly based in it. Time will tell I won't make any assumptions I'll just be confident I've done all I could.

Our Jacob has made a lot of friends who are active in a local Baptist church. He often goes with his friends on a Wednesday night to "hang" out and socialize at the church's youth social hall. The church provides snacks, drinks, a pool table, ping-pong table and other wholesome activities. In order to participate in the fun the kids are required to sit through a little bit of preaching. Jacob feels this is a small sacrifice for getting to "hang" with some good kids.

Mike and I have thought and talked this over several times and we still don't see a problem with it. So, this morning when Jacob called from a friends house to ask if he could go to services with a friend at the same church before coming home, I said okay if he really wanted to. His answer was, "I just want to see all my friends one last time before they start school tomorrow."

I'm still not seeing any problem with any of this. Am I being blind? Am I too confident in my child's faith in his own church? He went to mass with us at our church last night if he really wants to sit through some more preaching, does it really matter? Any thoughts or input is welcomed...

Small Successes

It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that.

I was able to hang every load (except towels) on the clothes line this week. I'm confident this helps keep the electric bill in check.
Cleaned the girls closet with their help. Also took the bag of hand-me-down clothes to a family we go to church with who has 2 little girls. This is a huge accomplishment!! Usually the bag will sit in my car for several months and it was only there for a day or two.
Took my urine sample the doctor wanted me to drop off for analysis. Remember I was sick a few weeks ago? She wanted to be sure everything had cleared up. I am not good about following up with extra doctor orders like this!! So I am counting this as an accomplishment. Probably good that I did because I need to do it again in a couple more weeks. Now the question remains will I be good again about it?

Thank you Lord for a wonderful week! I had a few moments of feeling low, but I tried to remain focused that what I do brings glory to you even if it doesn't contribute to our finances. Also had some blue moments of missing dad, but prayers again got me through.

I'm up way too early today so I figured it would be a good time to do some blogging and catch you up on my knitting and the garden's harvest...

Finished one of the socks that I've been knitting in the Hedera pattern by Cookie A. I've made these socks before and they are super easy and pretty. This yarn was some the shop in CT chose and mailed to me and it is super pretty.

I may be giving this pair away.... we'll see.

Here is my Top Down Scoop Neck Cardigan by Janet Soucy. I made the smaller size in this pattern and it seems smaller than expected. Made mom the medium and it fits her perfectly. Was thinking of someone in particular for this, but it may not work now. We'll have to see once it is finished and off the needles, sometimes it just looks small before it is done. Yes, I'm pushing forward!

This time I didn't forget to take a photo of the potatoes Mike dug. Again, the garden is only in its' first year of harvest and this Virginia clay, excuse me soil, takes A LOT of doctoring before it will produce a plentiful crop. We are still surprisingly pleased with it!

Notice the peppers, which have grown beautifully, and the acorn squash which is only 1 of about 5 we have!

Can't help but look at our 6+, 5 of which is wooded and on the side of a mountain ridge, and think where can we expand our garden to for next year? However, Mike quickly reminds me it is him that does the majority of the work (okay 95% of it is a pretty big majority) and he isn't as excited to expand as I am. But gosh do I LOVE the rewards of having a garden!!

Twelve years ago today was one of the most joyous days of mine and Mike's married life, but it was also one of the scariest. I gave birth by c-section to our first daughter, Haley. She was full term and gave a good cry when they pulled her from me. But just moments later things became really hectic around her. They discovered something wasn't quite right, but couldn't tell us more than that until "after they ran some tests". Mike held her briefly so I could see her and they whisked her off to the NICU.

And so it began, our scary journey to a child born with a birth defect, and our education on medical terms we never thought we'd have to learn. Here I am holding her for the very first time, just moments before her intubation for her first surgery, she isn't even 24 hours old.

The medical term for her defect was Tracheoesophageal fistula, and we would learn later that she actually had 2. Type A and an H-type. Her esophagus never attached to her stomach and in her throat the esophagus attached to the trachea. She had 2 surgeries by the time she was 3 weeks old and we were finally able to bring her home at 4 weeks.

She required 2 further surgeries when she was 2 and several tests, and doctors appointment to monitor her growth and etc. for the first 5 years of life. We were truly blessed however!! Most babies born with this abnormality typically have heart, kidney or limb anomalies, she had none. She has 3 permanent scars from the surgery as well as a paralyzed vocal chord, none of which have lasting effects.

My Haley is a beautiful 12 year old girl who came into this world having to fight and be strong. I thank God every day for blessing us with her, but especially on this her birthday!! Love you Haley, your strength still inspires me today!

Small Successes

My small successes this week:

I got Mike back off to work after 3 weeks of recovery from his elbow surgery. Joint surgery can lead to a serious infection very easily. I bandaged him and took great care of his incision so this is one of my small triumphs. (I suppose Mike can relish in this success too! LOL)
We have been able to make time all week to play scrabble as a family. And the kids are asking to play and enjoying it very much! Even though Faith is too young to play she isn't too far away and enjoys watching.
My nephew called me on Sunday, and unexpectedly dropped in with a friend for dinner. I never once felt overwhelmed by this last minute visit. Because I'm an A type personality, and expect everything to be in perfect order before a guest comes through my doors I feel really good about this. I feel like I may just be turning a corner on my OCD issues!!

A Little Crushed!

A few weeks ago when I was really sick and could barely get out of bed, it was necessary for us to buy a few loaves of bread. A week or so after my illness, even when I was up and around again, we still bought a few more loaves as well as hamburger buns.

Last Friday, I got back on to my bread baking schedule. Even made hamburger buns again for burger dinner this past Monday. I have to say they tasted sooo much better!!

Now today, I should be baking bread again, but I've since learned Mike prefers the bought bread!! When I asked him if he wanted to buy a loaf of bread when he went to town today, instead of the response I was hoping to get, "I would prefer it if you baked a loaf, sweetie!" I got, "Sure will!!"

I'm confident he'll say something like, "I just don't like making more work for you." But I know this is his kind way of saying, "I much prefer store bought bread." Remember we've been married 23+ years and I can read the man like a book!

**Sigh!!** Not sure what to do with this new information... feeling a little crushed!

I Have Succeeded

For as long as I can remember my parents always had people over their house to visit. Friday nights, especially during lent, my parents would cook fish'n chips, and Sunday afternoon would be steaks on the grill.

There would be entertainment too! My father even had his own little group for a while. He would sing, there were a couple of guitarist, and my mom and aunt were the back up singers. And everyone was allowed to bring their talents and join in the fun and do their own performance. It was kind of like an open mic night in the back yard or basement. Sometimes I think my husband fell more in love with all that before he even fell for me!!

My parents didn't have a huge home, and they weren't overly wealthy, but they ALWAYS shared everything they had and did it with gusto!!

Maybe that is why I've always felt the need to be a good hostess? We don't have gatherings the way my parents did, but when we do have people over the house I try to give it my all. Even when it is just my kids friends, I try to make sure everyone feels comfortable and welcomed!

Yesterday my nephew called out of the blue. Him and friend were in the area and he asked, "If we stop in would you be able to hook us up with some home cooked food?" This phone call and visit has made my entire week!!

I feel like my entire existence has been justified and I've succeeded in making my loved ones feel welcome!! Not only did my nephew know he could call me unexpectadly, and bring a friend to my home, but he also knew I would have "home cooked" food!!

What in God's name is that sound?

Where I grew up was in no way urban. At night you could hear bull frogs down on the pond, and crickets chirping, nothing too exotic.

Now living where we do I've heard some crazy noises at night. Thankfully my outdoors-men husband has been able to educate me on the noises. The past few nights we have been able to sleep with all the windows open allowing for all those sounds to trickle in along with the fresh air.

The newest one being an Easter Screech-Owl. Check out the link and give a listen. And by the way... it isn't as eerie a sound on this web site as it is at 4:00 am in the dark while you are attempting to fall back to sleep. SPOOKY would be the best way to describe it.

Some More of the Harvest

We realized when planting our garden this year, not to expect too much from it. It was the first year and the soil in our area needs A LOT of work. So, I can't help but be thrilled with whatever little we do harvest!

Although I had forgotten to take any pictures Mike has been digging potatoes, and we've been eating them for the past month!! He still has another row to dig, and I'll try to remember to get a photo this time to share.

Here are the spaghetti squash we picked. I realize it is only enough for about 2 meals in our family, but I'll take it!! We all love it and it isn't cheap when I do buy it. Trying to convince Mike to do another planting. We ate 3 of them last night with dinner and it was yummy!!

Instant Gratification

Even though I have 2 projects on the needles sometimes it is required to put them aside for a day to do a couple of other quick projects.

Faith has been playing with her baby dolls and was searching high and low for a baby bib, so I knitted her one. She told me she'd like to see some flowers on the next one. Uhm okay! (The little button I used is a purple flower.)

Then for fun and no reason what-so-ever... I crocheted myself a change purse.

It was fun to do these quick, instant gratification projects. Maybe I should spend some more time doing this stuff? Maybe save it all up and sell it? Hmmm? Maybe after I finish the socks and sweater I've started, you know me can't have too many eggs in the basket!

In The Knitting Bag

Finished knitting the socks I had been working on for over a MONTH! Can't believe it took me that long to finish a pair of socks. But... here they are:

I made them really loose fitting, and I like them.

The knitting still isn't going full force, but I did cast on another pair of socks in the Hedera pattern.

And I've casted on a sweater, the Neck Down Scoop Neck Cardigan by Diane Soucy.

I'll post photos of the actual projects when there is more to show. Both of these patterns I've made before and I think I just needed to do a couple of familiar patterns.

On the Home Front

Jake and I drove to bring Adam back to his parents on Saturday. We all really miss having him, but his parents insisted that 2 weeks was enough.

Mike got his staples out today, just short of 3 weeks since his surgery. He is doing really well and should be returning to work this week some time. This has me a little blue... I LOVE having my husband around and being with him... can't get sick of that!! But, someone has support my sorry behind!!

We took the kids to the movies last week. Gotta LOVE having a $1.00 theater near by!! Movies that are no longer in the big theaters, but still not on DVD. What a cheap way to spend the afternoon!!

Mike took Faith to see How to Train Your Dragon. He said there were a few scary parts for a 6 year old, but she LOVED it and wanted to know yesterday if she could go see it again. Mike said this is one that we should consider owning when it does come out on DVD. High praise!

Haley and I went to see Letters to Juliet. Definitely a "chick" flick, but it was awesome! Very endearing, romantic and adventurous with a very happy ending. Everything I LOVE about a movie. Haley enjoyed it too, although my tough exterior daughter would not admit it in front of her father. Now I am dreaming about a day that I can travel to Italy and explore the countryside. Why is it that movies do that to me? Please tell me I'm not alone and this a "chick" thing!

Still No Knitting, but a Very Good Day

Last summer we really didn't have any opportunities to go out and learn fun things to do in the area.

Yesterday, we were able to venture out and discover a great place to go for the day to swim, fish and picnic, Sherando Lake Park.

The kids played in the sand and water. Haley did some fishing. Mike met up with another friend (reconnected through facebook) that he used to be in the Navy with who happened to be vacationing near by. I still didn't get any knitting done, but it was a lovely day!

We took the long way home and drove some of the Blue Ridge Parkway, another adventure we had been wanting to take.

A Very Big Day!

Thank you everyone for all the prayers on a speedy recovery. Started feeling much better Thursday evening! The only thing that is bothering me now is the side effects of the strong antibiotics, but at least the fatigue is over.

I'm especially thankful I was feeling better before Friday. It was Faith's 6th birthday! We had a great day planned for her and I so didn't want to miss out on it.

We all went for breakfast to IHOP. We haven't been to an IHOP in probably 20 years!! It was AWESOME! Mike and Haley both have birthdays in August and it is most likely IHOP will be on the agenda to celebrate.

Then we went to Toys R Us, to do a little shopping for the birthday girl. She got a great play dough set, a piggy bank and a butterfly net.

Because you have to be six to do rock climbing, that was what she wanted to do. She did really well, and enjoyed it very much. If we do another home schooling rock climbing camp this fall it will be great that she can join us.

Then spaghetti for dinner, Faith's favorite, and Haley made her a birthday cake. It was truly a wonderful 6th birthday... for EVERYONE!

Small Successes - but not really

It is important for mother's to see that all their little successes through the week can become a big triumph.

However, this week I really can't say I had any small successes. I've been laid up sick in bed for 3 days!! It started overnight on Sunday, terrible stomach ache and vomiting!! I went through the day Monday in bed waiting for whatever it was to pass and it didn't, instead I started running a fever. So I got an appointment with the doctor on Tuesday morning. She has diagnosed me with pyelonephritis . She has run blood tests Tuesday, Wednesday and I have to go back tomorrow for another. I received a shot of antibiotics and have to take a round of antibiotics orally for 14 days. I'm still not 100%, but I am able to be up without feeling too fatigued.

My sister, who is an RN, told me that usually people are hospitalized with this. So... that can be my one success this week... I wasn't put into the hospital!!

This has NOT been fun! And poor Mike 5 days post surgery the poor guy was taking care of the kids and me instead of getting cared for himself.

I'm positive of one thing, next week I'm sure to have at least 3 small successes after getting my house back in order from being laid up! But.... none of them will be happening today!

Do As I Say, NOT as I Do

Something every parent teaches their children is internet safety. At least when they are old enough to understand it.

A few months ago Mike (husband aged 43) broke some of those rules. He became friendly with a friend of a friend. A man who had a common bond with Mike, he was on the same submarine... 20 years before Mike! Mike and him have become friendly through Facebook.

Gannon McHale, is currently acting in the play Tuesdays with Morrie at the Barter Theatre in Abington, NC. He contacted Mike last week to see if we would be home, on Sunday, so that he could come for a visit. Although Gannon feels he sits center left on many political issues, I knew for a fact before meeting him his opinions are FAR left of mine and Mike's. So, I promised Mike I would be a decent hostess and not start any political conversations.

It turned out to be a good visit. He brought his guitar and had a jam session with Jacob and Adam (visiting friend from CT).

Even the dog enjoyed the visit.

We managed to stay clear of any hot topics for the visit, but I just couldn't resist, when at the last minute he announced he was planning on leaving I just had to bring up one! My bad, I know!! We had a brief discussion on the Arizona Immigration Law. I won't bore you with the details, but as suspected... he has it ALL wrong!! LOL!

So, all is well that ends well. (Is that the saying?) Mike and I however, are being diligent to continue teaching our kids what NOT to do with strangers on the internet.

Olivine Sweater Done

Ah! Finished! I'm really please with this sweater! The pattern wasn't the easiest to read when I first started, but once I got going and figured out how the designer was writing, it became easier.

Now my problem is... what is next? Still haven't figured that out yet. Why?

Catching Up

Mike's surgery went well on Wednesday and he is in a little discomfort, but doing well. (For the faint at heart look away!)

Yesterday Jacob and I drove to PA to meet our good friends from CT. We had lunch with them and took their son Adam home with us for a few weeks.

My successes for this week:

Completed Haley's CAT with her and mailed it and Faith's in to be graded.
Bought buttons for the sweater I am near completing. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but there is only one store, that I'm aware of, that has a decent button selection and getting to it can be a real hassle. Usually the sweater sits finished for several weeks with out buttons, this time it is the reverse.
Got Mike through his elbow surgery. Well at least the first 24 hours of recovery after. I depend VERY much on my husband and having him not 100% can be very trying. (Especially because I then have to give more than 100% of myself!! LOL)

Turning it Over...

Saint Padre Pio, with all his wisdom said, "Pray, hope and don't worry. Worry is useless." Words I find myself repeating over and over.

During a recent homily at church a visiting priest said, "What a terrible insult to Jesus to worry." "Live in Jesus not in worry." Ouch! that hit home.

God is constantly reminding me!

However, genetically, I am predestined to worry!! A definite flaw in my makeup! I come from a LONG line of anxious people. Which is why at 3:00 o'clock in the morning I find myself up blogging and not sleeping!

Tomorrow (okay really today in a couple of hours) I take Mike in for his elbow surgery. And instead of sleeping I'm awake thinking and what ifing myself crazy!

So, I'm going to head to bed. Offer up my prayers. Tell satan to take a flying leap and leave me alone, I'm turning it all over to God. God ALWAYS takes care of us! He's proven it to me over and over again. (Not that He even needs to!)

Typically when I'm nearing the end of a knitting project I have 5 ideas in my head for what is next. This time however, I'm at a bit of a loss! I know it is crazy!!

Do I want to make Faith a dress for summer?

This is a great pattern that I've made 3 times now, but.... nah! this one still fits well.

Do I want to make another felted bag?

I don't think so. There isn't a need yet for another felted bag.

My brother Bill will be turning 50 in May 2011. I could go ahead and knit him a sweater for that and give it to him early so he can get plenty of use from it through this coming winter.

Still plenty of time to do that, no need to start now! Plus I need to buy yarn to make it and I really should be using stash!

Well I could just focus on finishing the pair of socks I'm working on.

That won't work! They are more than 75% finished too!

Great! Now I've realized I also need to figure out what socks I'm casting on next!

Ugh! Any ideas? Anyone?

How Far We've Come!

We were young and inexperienced, and I believe people thought we would never make it this far.

23 years ago today Mike and I go married, in the church, with our friends and family looking on. Mike still had more than 6 years left to serve in the Navy and the world was our oyster!

We've come a long way since that day, and I wouldn't change any of it. We've grown in our love and our faith in God. Some of the things we've been through:

We have 3 beautiful, really great kids.
We have buried both our fathers and losses of other loved ones.
We managed to get through our middle child needing surgery at birth and hospitalization, with follow up surgeries until she was 6.
Several moves! (But I think we are finally settled.)
Job changes for both of us and sometimes wondering how we would ever pay the bills.

We've come a long way baby! I'm truly blessed to have you as my life partner and I wouldn't want to do this with anyone else. Looking forward to the next 23+

Small Successes

Finished giving Faith her CAT! This was her first and she has never tested so there was a bit of a learning curve. For each of us. The way the questions are asked I needed to tweak a bit in order for them to make sense to her, but we did it and it looked to me like she did really well. Not 100%, but really well!
Finished reading a book. A fiction just for fun book. Do you have any idea how long it has been since I read a book just for fun? This is an accomplishment because time for me to just be mindless is good for my mental health.
I've managed to limit my on line computer time really well. It has been an adjustment in the routine for the better. Probably the reason I was able to accomplish #2 and my knitting is really progressing too. Not to mention my house has never looked so good on a Thursday morning!

Didn't Before, But I will Now

I've been washing laundry for... like... ever! You would think by now that I would have learned to check pockets!! That's right mom, most likely because you always told me to do it... now I don't. Still a rebel!

Last Friday morning I walked through the kid's rooms and picked up any laundry on their floors and got a dark load into the washer nice and early so it could get hung on the line. Much to my dismay when I opened the washer after the load finished there was Haley's Zune! (her MP3 player) It was in the pocket of her shorts that I had found on her bedroom floor!! My 11yo daughter loves this thing. She has music playing in her ears ALL the time. (another thing Mike and I need to evaluate at a later date, the amount of time she is "plugged" in) Not to mention these little buggers are not cheap. All I could do was place the Zune on the deck in the sun and hope, maybe it would dry and work again.

Later that morning while talking to a friend on the phone, she asked, "Why do you seem dismayed?" I explained my dilemma about washing the Zune. She suggested I put it into a plastic baggy with rice. She had heard of people doing that with their cell phones after jumping into pools with them in their pockets. Ok! What do I have to lose?

Placed it into a baggy with rice, and for extra care placed that into a airtight container. We left it on the counter for almost 3 days. Yesterday morning Haley tested it, and IT WORKS!! I was and am stoked.

So, note to self: check pockets of clothing, especially the kids, no more being the rebellious teen.

And for all of you out there, I hope you never need this cool little trick, but now you have it in your arsenal of motherhood fixes.

How do I spend my time?

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, we live out in the middle of no where. This was, I realize by choice, so I can't complain.

A disadvantage to living so rural is there isn't high speed internet readily available, nor scheduled to be in the near future, through the phone lines. As a result we have to get it through satellite and pay handsomely for it. Even more of a hassle the internet satellite company has structured their plans so the less you pay the less you are allowed to download in a 24 hour period!! (I'm not giving you the name of the company, because if I do I may really go off on a rant. Have never been happy with them.) To top it all off they get you into a contract for 2 years!!!

When we moved here, almost 2 years ago, we found the expense justifiable. The kids need it for school. We can continue to do our home banking. The adjustment to living in the boonies won't be as drastic. The cost of gas to drive all the way to town for free wi-fi wasn't really an option.

As a result we have settled in quite nicely to our routine. Using the internet and paying the bill. However, recently Mike and I have realized we are ALL spending too much time "staying connected". Both computers stay on the kitchen table all day connected to the internet. My computer even gives a little alert signal when email comes into my box!! I'm quick to sit and send off a reply.

We have 4 months left on our contract with the satellite company, but I've reduced our plan significantly. Download amount has been cut drastically. But, this is all for the best! We have set up an hour limit per day for each of us. 30 minutes at a time or however you want to break up your time. The hour rule is more to get us realizing the time we spend using the internet, and hopefully break our poor habits. We have also started shutting the computers down in between, so the temptation isn't there.

It is amazing how after just a couple days of this new routine to realize what a BIG part of MY day I spent just reading and replying to email or reading things on Facebook! I'm disgusted with myself!

This is a positive for all of us, and I'm pleased that Mike and I are setting the example for our kids and correcting the problem. Will keep you posted.... well if I allow enough time for it...

Running on Empty

This will be really quick I only have 5 minutes left. No not on my laptop battery. But, on the time I'm allowing myself to be on the computer. I'll tell you more about it when I have time, but Mike and I are trying a new routine that limits the about of time we each spend on the computer during the day. Soooo it may take me a while to get into a new routine of reading blogs, emails and etc. and still have time to write a blog... This will just take a little practice... talk to you more later about it... until then have a great Friday everyone!

Small Successes

It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that.

My small successes this week were:

Was able to hang every load of laundry this week except for 3 (2 were towels which I don't hang). Not sure if this is saving me any money on the electric, but I have to imagine it helps.
Out of the past 7 days I've gotten up and walked 5 of them! My motivation for walking in the morning again is for the endorphins it creates. I truly need them, especially this week as we approach the 1st anniversary of my father's death. But, hopefully it is helping me get healthier too.
This last one I'm torn on considering it a success. Mike and I met with the guidance counselor at the public high school, Jacob is seriously contemplating going this year which will be his sophomore year. We have home schooled him since 4th grade and he has always been happy doing that. However, this year is different I guess. We have still yet to decide if he will be going, but I'm considering this a success this week overall. Because if I'm doing what is necessary to support one of my kids in their decisions that is a success. (I'm sure I will be blogging more about this HUGE decision we are facing later.)

Changing It for the Better

I'm a creature of habit, I love a routine! Doesn't everyone? Everything in its place and predictable. Ah pure heaven to my A type personality. However, sometimes I think it is good to challenge one's self and change it up a bit!

Last July when we returned from Massachusetts after my father's funeral, my wonderful husband encouraged me to start walking in the morning. On the days he was home he would even join me. Lord knows I truly needed the endorphins and that was the reason for Mike suggesting it. I continued on that routine right through to Thanksgiving too. Then when the cold began lasting until later in the morning my routine was broken and the walk was dropped.

Now that summer is in full swing here in Virginia, and the anniversary of Dad's death is fast approaching, again my wonderful husband has been encouraging me to add my walk back into the routine. It takes some courage to change my routine, especially when I'm adding exercise to it, but I did begin on Saturday. I must say, it is feeling pretty good. Most likely it's the endorphins talking, but I'm going to continue.

My Father

This is my first Father's Day with my dad in heaven. Allow me to share a few thoughts I had of him today and what I would say to him if given the chance.

Dad,

thank you for your faith in God and sharing it with your children and grandchildren,
I loved the way you could make just about anyone your friend,
I will always think about the way you'd smiled at mom (with a glint in your eye) when you thought no one was looking,
your talent for emceeing and singing were unprecedented,
you were strict when I was growing up, but now I know how right you were,
I'm thankful for the way you always provided for us as a family without ever once letting anyone know how difficult it could be some times,
I still have the memories of your big hands and the feeling they gave me when you would reprimand me when necessary or stroke my head or my arm when I needed reassurance,
there are too many things to tell you that I miss about you, but let me tell you one of silly things, your beautiful handwriting in the annual birthday and Christmas cards.

So dad, last Father's Day you began to share with us the pain you were in with the cancer taking over your body, that memory is slowly beginning to fade for me. Instead I have the 41 years of my life, with you in it, to focus on and to thank God for.

Rest in peace daddy!

Friday Morning Ramblings

It is now 6:35 am, the air is so cool (nice break from the heat), so we have the windows open. I woke about 4:30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. After falling asleep about 11:30 pm I'm sure to need a nap later this afternoon. Mike gets up at 5:30 and leaves at 6:00 so I got up with him. RARE but very nice!

I've done all there is to do on the internet so I've decided to go ahead and blog a bit. So many things running through my head that I can't find any peace inside my mind. It is nice to have the birds singing and the sun just peaking over the mountains, thank you Lord for those peaceful pleasures.

Am I the only one who allows their mind to control them so? Is it a mom thing? or genetic?

Think I will go lay in bed while everyone is still asleep and say the rosary... thanks for listening...

Back in the day when my mom stayed at home, I can recall her sharing coffee with a neighbor who was also at home with her kids. Today being a SAHM isn't very common. Add to that where we live... out in the wilderness... having coffee with anther SAHM just isn't in the cards.

I have however been blessed to find other SAHM, who home school, knit, and even some are Catholic that are bloggers like me. Well they are really good at blogging, me I kind of just ramble thoughts out as I type.

It has become almost a ritual for me in the morning. At least the mornings I have no where to be. Turn on the computer, head outside to feed and water the chickens, come in and fix myself a cup of coffee or tea, make Faith and I some breakfast and log on to the computer. Check email, see if there are any new messages from friends and family on Facebook and open my friends blogs and start reading. They even read my blog and often leave me a comment.

Thank you God for blessing me with some really wonderful women out there, such as: Wool and Chocolate, Become What You Are, Mama Midwife and Aussie Coffee Shop.

Living Off the Land - Praise God

It wasn't my goal when preparing dinner, that it consist only of that which had been harvested from our yard, but it worked out that way and aren't I proud!!

Small Successes

I realize I don't participate in Small Successes every week, but I try to when I feel I've actually been successful at something. Some weeks I don't feel I've done anything of importance to even mention, maybe this week I will try to be more attentive to the everyday and see if I can participate 2 weeks in a row.

1. School is essentially finished for this year. Jacob and Haley still need to do math, but that was only because we took them both back to redo some lessons they were each struggling with. In a crazy way that is a definite success!!

2. Finished the afghan I was making for my nieces wedding gift. Well except for figuring out how I want to do the border. It is crocheted the way the pattern says, but I'm not happy with it and will most likely rip it out and redo it.

3. The exhaust system on my 11 yo car was getting really noisy and that is now fixed. AND the true success here is that I didn't lose my mind through the process!! I don't always handle life's every day hurdles such as this with grace, but I did. Mostly because my wonderful husband held my hand the entire time.

My hard working husband has had elbows that look like this for some time:

They had never caused him a lot of pain. Only when bumped.

Several years ago a doctor diagnosed him with bone spurs. Not an uncommon ailment. We knew the only way to correct it however was surgery. The only problem would be that he needed to schedule his vacation for the time of the surgery because he is our sole provider and we really can't manage without his income for any length of time. With his elbows never being painful and him always being able to continue working with them vacation was always spent for other reasons and he never had the surgery.

Last month the pain he was in with the left elbow became unbearable and constant. He made an appointment and met with an orthopedic surgeon a few weeks ago to find out what had changed. The doctor discovered the left elbow bone spur actually was cracked. Thus, surgery can not be put off any longer!!

Now we prepare for his vacation to co-ordinate with his surgery and get ourselves prepared financially to handle him being out of work for longer than 2 weeks in case the healing doesn't go as planned.

I'm praying hard and trusting in God!! But I must admit that this is a lot harder for my human flawed self to do than I care to say.

The other morning I had a dream my father was riding in a car with me while I drove and he was holding my hand. He didn't speak, but I saw his hand and his face and knew he was there. Do you think this may be God's way of letting me know He's hearing my prayers? And I need to just trust?

A Knitter Prepares

I'll put pictures up of the (nearly) finished socks when they are done and the (nearly) finished afghan when it is complete. The socks I only have a toe to sew and the afghan I just need to finish the border.

For the summer Jacob's piano lesson is on Tuesdays. So, this will be the day I try to do any errands in the city while I'm there.

Yesterday, while Jacob was in his lesson it was just too hot to sit in the car and knit like I normally would, so I ventured to the university's book store. (Barnes & Noble) I wandered around browsing and look at this bargain I came across:

On May 31st, Catholics celebrate the feast of the Visitation. When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, and greeted Mary by saying, "Blessed are you among women. Blessed is the fruit of your womb." I was reading in Faith and Family magazine that a good way to remember the feast day would be to visit someone who may be lonely. Bring them some cookies and tea and sit and visit with them.

My 19 yo nephew (and godson) is living in Richmond, VA for his summer internship job and this will be his only weekend off for the summer. He decided to come visit us!! He arrived yesterday and will be here until Monday. We haven't seen him since my father's funeral last July so this a real treat! Especially Jacob who really admirers his older cousin and I must add, he is an excellent role model for my Jacob.

I'm loving cooking for someone who can really appreciate a home cooked meal! This morning I made fruit salad.

And organic 7 grain pancakes!

Tonight he will join us at mass, and our church's monthly potluck cookout after. I'm confident the kids and I will all be standing prouder as we introduce him to our parish friends.

So, it may not be the way the magazine suggested we remember the feast day, but I think it will do.

Things Old and New

Mike and I finally found a table for our deck that we both agreed on and it was a good price. I think it looks really good with the umbrella and chairs we already owned. We probably won't be eating Thanksgiving dinner around it, but I'm finding it is a nice place to sit with my cup of tea and lap top this morning.

Down the other end of the deck, just off the master bedroom, you can see we invested in a......... jacuzzi tub! Well for now this as close as it's gonna get!!

Good Friends

A Catholic homeschooling friend of mine lost her father-in-law completely unexpectedly last week. Her family (6 kids and husband) were in fact getting ready to spend a week with him on his farm in PA just this week. So instead of going there for vacation they are now in PA to plan and attend his funeral.

Having just lost my own father last year I easily feel their pain!

Two other Catholic homeschooling moms and myself are heading to their house this afternoon to clean the house and put food in their fridge/freezer for when they return this weekend. We can't be in PA to support them so we are feeling this will be a nice gesture here at home.

I am truly blessed to have a great network of friends. Although the 4 of us don't get to spend a lot of time together due to our separate busy schedules and the distance of where we live, it is reassuring to know we are always there for each other in the long run.

Does it really count?

Does it really count as a collection if you only have 2? and you have only had just 2 for the longest time?

I have a thing for old glass milk bottles. They usually sit on a kitchen window sill, sometimes with flowers in them, and I am crazy about them. I really don't recollect how I even came to own these 2, but I'm thankful I do. Maybe I'm crazy about them because my paternal grandfather was a dairy farmer, and I pray that some day I may just find one that could have belonged to him.

Officially I declare today to begin "collecting" glass milk bottles! (Mike, You've been warned.)

Now, point me to the nearest antique store, I need to add to this "collection".

A Year Ago

This day last year started my journey with mom and dad...

They came to Virginia for what we thought would be a quick layover on their trip to Massachusetts. In hopes of getting a better diagnosis at Dana Faber Institute and live with my brother. Dad had been fighting cancer for several months by this point and wasn't winning the battle. He knew this better than any of us. After arriving in Virginia he decided he didn't want to go any further and chose to spend his final days here.

God had a plan and we were all in for the ride. Thank you Lord for that opportunity!! I will NEVER regret a moment of those days... He lived another 5 weeks...

Silly Rabbit... Tricks are for Kids!

Back in September Mike and I (on a day of insanity) decided to get a bunny for the "farm". Take a look back at my October blog post about the little guy/girl. To top it all off we have no idea if it is a boy or a girl.

With the hours Mike works he didn't have any time to make the little bunny a hutch before the cold weather set in. So, we kept it in a dog cage out in the shed. Haley was the primary one responsible for cleaning the cage, feeding and watering the little guy.

A few months ago on a really beautiful weather day, Mike decided to move it onto the grass in the cage. Eventually the door got opened, and little bunny was allowed to roam around the yard. It didn't wander far! Haley would catch it at the end of the day and put it back in the shed. After some time of this routine little bunny got wise to those tricks, and finally one night was left to wander all over.

There was a morning when Mike was checking the oil in my car and was completely startled by the crazy little bunny who learned to climb into the engine compartment of my car!! It was quite the sight to see my husband jump when opening the hood only to see bunny staring up at him. We believe the little bunny has even gone for a ride or 2 in there!!

Now bunny, disappears for days and just when we believe he may have finally met his demise never to be seen again he reappears in the front yard nibbling the clover, or playing in the yard with the cat.

This little bunny that we bought for only $5, has brought us more entertainment than anything!

And no, if you are wondering, he has not bothered the garden... yet!

This morning Mike and Faith were doing some chores outdoors around the "farm" and came across this injured butterfly.

Faith brought it indoors to show off and is now planning where it will sleep tonight. Oh Boy!

After some research we believe it is a papilio polyxenes fabricius or common name Black Swallowtail.

Together for Life

When you get married it is because you want to spend the rest of your life with that other person. Spend every day of your lives together! I love being with my husband every day! After 23 years of marriage I sometimes feel like that young girl newly married when I see him and my heart actually leaps!

This week Mike had to travel to Texas for work and has been gone since Tuesday. Deep inside my stomach aches and my heart aches each day he is gone. I learned way back when we were first married, and Mike was in the Navy on submarines, you can't shrivel up and hide under the covers until he returns. No instead you have to carry on and you can't miss a beat. Especially now with kids!

As I lay in bed at night, while he is gone, and pray for his safety, my thoughts drift to my mom. She has been without her soul mate, my dad, for nearly a year. How she must ache every day. But, she is an incredibly faithful woman! She doesn't just shrivel up and stay under the covers, although I'm sure there are days she considers it. She continues on, showing her children how her faith keeps her strong to carry on without dad.

My prayers are always with her, but this week especially. Mom, you are truly an inspiration! I love you and thank you for the wonderful example you are and have always been to me.

Queen of Heaven and Earth

One of my on line blogging friends asked an excellent question of yesterday's post. Why do we crown Mary and call her The Queen of Heaven and Earth? Such a good question that I couldn't resist taking the opportunity to explain my answer it today's blog post.

Why queen?

In the Old Testament there are several references to the mother of the king being referred to as the Queen Mother. Because kings could have many wives but would only have one mother.

2 Kings 24:12, "Then King Jehoiakim, along with his advisers, nobles, officials, and the qeen mother, surrendered to the Babylonians."

JESUS IS KING, and it is understood he only has one mother.

Why crowning? and why over heaven and earth?

Revelation 12:1-2; 5 , "A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne."

Revelation 12: 7-9, "Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it."

God makes it quite clear the woman in the first passage obviously gives birth to the savior, therefore it is understood to be Mary. She wears a crown. She is a key player in the battle against the devil (the dragon), and he now resides on earth. This power doesn't come to her on her own, but by the power given by Jesus, her son.

I am in no way a theologian or an apologetic. This is just my humble understanding from what I've read. Hope it helps anyone who has questions. Thank you for the opportunity to defend my faith, it only makes my understanding of it more clear for myself. God Bless!

What are they thinking?

Growing up as a Catholic, especially one that lived where it was common to be a Catholic, there are certain things that I always just took for granted. Having a statue of Mary in the garden, saying the rosary, and religious photos around the house.

Living in Virginia as a Catholic we are definitely in the minority. I never feel questioned about my religion or really called to defend it, but I would if I had to. Instead I silently wonder what the non-Catholic people who come to my house think when they see Mary in the garden or the large photo of Padre Pio on my kitchen wall. Or when Jacob tells his friends who call at 3:30 we didn't answer the phone because we were in the middle of saying the rosary.

At mass this past weekend we honored the Blessed Mother with a May crowning celebration. It passed through my thoughts, as I sat in the pew, "What would those non-Catholics be thinking of this ritual?" From an outsiders perspective I can see why they may say things like, "Those Catholics worship idols." or "They worship a cookie." But, I know the true reasons behind what we do, so in some respects I wish they would ask me. So I could be given the opportunity to defend my faith, and maybe help them understand a little better.

Maybe I will just be thankful I don't have to defend my faith or religion in this country. Or, at least for now...

Honoring Mary

The month of May, in the Catholic Church, is dedicated to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. We are expected to remember her and pray to her with extra attention this month.

With last Saturday being May 1st, before mass, I asked our priest what the plan was to honor Mary. Remember our parish is very small with only about 75 families, and only one mass a weekend. Although it is a nice community of people who have wonderful fellowship I find we sometimes fall short on the spiritual aspects of our faith. So, there weren't any plans to do anything. Our pastor knew we needed to fix this so by the time I walked to my car after mass I had adopted the job of co-ordinating a May crowning for this week's mass.

My first instinct would have normally been, "There is no way I want to try and pull this off in 6 days." But, it never even crossed my mind. Instead I looked at it as, "I HAVE to do this. It is for Mary."

Now I'm going to go through my day doing all my normal chores with a little bit of apprehension of how well things will go at mass today. Whenever worry or apprehension does creep in I'm going to pray and offer it up and know that all will be well. It doesn't have to be perfect, anything to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary is right.

Maybe I will even get a chance to take some photos. (Now that is optimistic!)
